Cryolipolysis, also known as fat freezing, is a nonsurgical fat removal procedure that uses cold temperatures to reduce fat deposits in certain areas of the body. The procedure is designed to reduce localized fat or swelling when it does not go away with diet or exercise. We use an instrument to isolate an area of fat and expose it to precisely controlled temperatures that are cold enough to freeze the layer of subcutaneous fat but not cold enough to freeze the covering tissue. These “frozen” fat cells then crystallize, causing the cell membrane to divide.
Destroying the actual fat cells means they can no longer store fat. It also sends a signal to the body’s lymphatic system, which lets it know to collect the destroyed cells. This natural process takes place over several weeks and culminates when the fat cells leave the body as waste.
